Shabbat

Shabbat Peace

Shabbat - the Sabbath - begins on Friday evening at sundown and ends at sundown on Saturday evening. As the Creator rested on the seventh day, we are commanded to refrain from ordinary work and to celebrate the sacred. Shabbat takes precedence over all other observances; even mourners rise up on the Sabbath.
Traditionally Friday evening is the time for a festive family meal which includes several blessings. Candles are lit with a prayer blessing the Divine who commands us to kindle the Sabbath lights. Bread is broken with a blessing for the One who brings forth the grain from the earth. A cup of wine, symbol of life, is shared with a blessing for Adonai, who makes the vine to bear fruit. Parents also pray over their children, that they may grow righteous as the mothers and fathers of our faith.
The stitched articles here follow the commandment of "hiddur mitzvah", glorifying divine law by making it even more beautiful to observe.
